Dynamic, expressive, sensitive, here are some adjectives that can define the direction of the young conductor Simon Proust. He places himself between the score, the musicians and the audience to serve music.

Despite his young age, Simon Proust has already had many successful experiences as a conductor.  Second prize of the “International Conducting Competition George Enesco” in Bucharest, in the “Princess Astrid International Music Competition”, and “Talent ADAMI 2016”, his career is starting in France and abroad. His passion for orchestral music manifests itself through his sensitive and energetic conducting of a large variety of musical styles. He is actually musical director of “Orchestre des Jeunes du Centre” in France. He was assistant conductor of Matthias Pintscher and the Ensemble Intercontemporain between 2017 and 2019, and assistant conductor of Thomas Dausgaard in the Scottish BBC Orchestra between 2016 and 2018. He also assisted Laurence Equilbey, Accentus Choir and Insula Orchestra last year for a production “Der Freischütz” performed in Europe. (Paris, London, Brussels, Vienna…)

Simon Proust started his musical education as a percussionist at the conservatory of his hometown of Tours in France. In 2010, he entered the “Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris” to study orchestral conducting with Maestro Alain Altinoglu. He completed his conducting studies with a master diploma in June 2015. Simon Proust’s musicianship has been influenced by personalities like D. Zinman, P. Rophé, S. Mälkki, P. Eötvos and B. Haitink. He continues to develop his knowledge of the lyrical repertoire during a master class with P. Arrivabeni and the “Opera Royal de Wallonie”.

His wide repertoire not only includes the great masterpieces but also lesser known music, spanning works from small chamber orchestras to larger symphonic settings. His programs frequently include rediscovered or rarely played works. Contemporary music also plays an important part in his repertoire. He participated in a master-class with the “Ensemble Intercontemporain” and studied contemporary music with P. Eötvös at the Budapest Music Center. He regularly works with composers and has already conducted about fifty  world premieres.

He conducts many orchestras in France like “Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire”, “Orchestre National de Lille”, “Orchestre de Chambre de Paris”, “Orchestre Symphonique et Lyrique de Nancy”, “Orchestre Symphonique Région Centre Tours”… He has the opportunity to conduct concerts in prestigious festivals in Europe (“Fêtes musicales en Touraine”, Chambord Festival”, “Lammermuir Festival”, “Sounds festival”…).

In the coming season, Simon Proust will conduct the “Orchestre National de Metz”, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, “Ostinato Orchestra”, in the “Conservatoire de Paris”… In October 2020, he was selected to the “Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition” in Frankfurt and he’s in the final panel of the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam.
